After opting to focus on Computer Science in UCD I took a few jobs doing software testing, writing web pages and running the systems in an internet restaurant (like an interent cafe but with better food!). My first proper IT job was with Abtech Computer Services in Annapolis MD, USA doing whatever needed doing – putting together PC’s, outfitting offices for networking and phone, configuring company LANs etc. That was good practice for my next gig as Site System Adminstrator in Sun Microsystems in Dublin. There was a learning experience! After a brief stint contracting to Irish telcos, I went back to Sun after graduating and am now with Oracle.
These days I manage the Software Maintenance Engineering team, which is primarily focused on Quality Assurance of the updates to Solaris that we ship to customers, but we’ve also been involved with database integration, Super Cluster development, Openstack, packaging, python tools development, and generally getting involved with projects from the firmware up to fluffy cloud application layer! I’m also responsible for the customer facing package repositories pkg.oracle.com and the customer registration and authentication system that goes with it, and you’ll find me posting a monthly blog on blogs.oracle.com detailing the latest features and fixes we’ve put into Solaris.
Outside of the day job my main areas of interest in computing these days are around python, ‘hacking’ and data science.
Most of the projects I’ve worked on are internal but I’ve a couple of bits and pieces on https://github.com/albertw
